WHAT IS APPRISE?

APPRISE is the free State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) for all Medicare beneficiaries in Pennsylvania.  The Pennsylvania Department of Aging created APPRISE to help Pennsylvanians understand their Medicare and other health insurance benefits and assist them in making sound decisions about what is best for them.  APPRISE counselors are specially trained volunteers who can answer your questions about Medicare, Medicaid, Medigap, Medicare Advantage plans, long term care insurance, and the prescription drug benefit and provide you with objective, easy-to-understand information.  You may call Sandy Fennell, APPRISE Coordinator, at (724) 548-3290 to schedule an appointment.

APPRISE also wants to make sure you know about the Extra Help and Medicare Savings Programs.  Extra Help can help lower your prescription drug co-payments and premiums, and cover the cost of the coverage gap.  You may qualify if you are single and have total monthly income of less than $1,518/month and less than $14,100 in resources, or if you are married and have a total monthly income of less than $2,058/month and less than $28,150 in resources.  The Medicare Savings Program can help you with the payment of your Part B premium.  You may qualify if you are single and have a total monthly income of less than $1,366/month and less than $7,560 in resources, or if you are married have a total monthly income of less than $1,852/month and less than $11,340 in resources.

The Pennsylvania Health Law Project (PHLP), which is a partner of the APPRISE Program, can also provide information on these programs, in addition to providing information on access to healthcare for low-income consumers, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.  You can access their link at http://www.phlp.org/.
